About Us

The Golden Resources Group (“the Group”) was founded in 1946 as a trading company named Yuen Loong, which obtained its rice importing license in Hong Kong in 1955 and began the Group’s romance with rice for decades. With the wholesaling license Yuen Loong acquired in 1959, it opened the door for a vertically integrated range of business activities including rice import, wholesale, warehousing and distribution.

In 1990, Golden Resources Development International was incorporated and, including its subsidiary Yuen Loong and other business interests, was publicly listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX stock code : 677) in 1991. Over the years, the Group has achieved the pre-eminent position of being the largest wholesaler and distributor of the Hong Kong rice industry, offering full service from rice sourcing, milling and formulating to packaging, marketing and distribution including export markets. The Golden Resources Centre in Tsing Yi housed the only complete premium rice milling plant in Hong Kong with automated processing lines certified for ISO 9001 and HACCP since 2003 and ISO22000 qualification in 2009.

As the market leader in Hong Kong, the Group was first to introduce small consumer-packs in the 70s and vacuum packing treatment and temperature controlled storage in the 80s. The Group was also the pioneer to use eco-friendly degradable rice packaging in 2006, the quality of which complied with European Union’s degradable packaging standard.

In 2008, the Group expanded its business scope to fast retailing with the master license rights from Circle K Stores Inc. to operate Circle K convenience stores in Vietnam. As the first convenience store in Vietnam, Circle K not only defined and shaped convenience store format for Vietnamese market but also brought in a whole new convenience shopping experience for local customers.

As of March 2023, Circle K has over 420 stores in Vietnam, strategically placed in 10 major cities across the country which reached out to some 60% its urban population. This has made Circle K the only convenience stores with nationwide coverage. Vietnam possesses the youngest work force amongst other Asian countries, with 100 million total population and trending to be the next production hub in South East Asia, Circle K Vietnam foresees ample opportunities in the coming decades riding on the economic growth of the country, its increasing urbanization and purchase power.

With well-established on-premises, off-premises and online distribution channels in Hong Kong through its rice business and its logistics and convenience retailing network in Vietnam, the Group is targeting to stretch its portfolio and launch other quality fast moving consumer products in both markets, revitalize its trading origin through the new distribution platforms.

On 28th of March 2023, the Group rebranded its Chinese name as a testament to its ventures beyond rice and in tandem with the English name Golden Resources Development International Limited.

In addition to the above twin growth engines, in June 2023, the Group activated its third business platform and successfully invested in a project to develop a Retailtainment Hub in Japan. The acquired project, consisted of buildings and surrounding land, is situated within 10 minutes’ walk from the heart of Hirafu in Niseko and easily accessible to all four Niseko United skiing resorts, namely Annupuri, Niseko, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono Ski Resort.

These 4 Resorts, often referred to as Niseko United, became the hottest hub for winter sports in Asia Pacific not only for overseas but also domestic visitors since it first won the World Ski Award in 2013 as the Best Ski Resort in Japan. Major hotel development projects were either just completed or underway. The area dearly needed retail, food and other services activities to meet the escalating demand.

Riding on its FMCG, food services supply and retail operations experience, the Group envisaged a great opportunity to turn the properties and surrounding land into a “retailtainment” destination which may paraphrase as the Hirafu version of Vancouver Whistler Village in Niseko United area. The project will not only enrich holiday experience of visitors but also bring quality products and services to the increasing number of working population for all the new and upcoming hospitality establishments.

The FMCG supply and distribution business unit in Hong Kong, the convenience retailing operations in Vietnam together with the retailtainment and dining hub in Niseko form the three core pillars of the Group for sustainable development.

In August 2023, the Group transformed its corporate logo to five grains, signifying all crops and the harvest of the five key grains that nourish people with a healthy and good life. Every initiative the Group innovates today will lay the foundation for a brighter future as it strives to enrich lives through quality brands and products as in its new corporate motto, ‘Make Today Golden For Tomorrow’.

Apart from the three pillars, the Group is the majority shareholder of Supreme Development Company Limited. It’s factory in Greater Bay Area developed and produced eco-friendly packaging, security packaging etc., primarily for overseas markets. In the past few years, the Group has also started to invest in start-up companies in sectors that create synergy with the Group’s existing business units or offer a potential to extend the scope of existing businesses, such as food chain extension, food tech and AI-applications, just to name a few.

With its roots in Hong Kong, the Group's commitment to serve the community was well acknowledged by the "Caring Company" awarded by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for consecutive years.
